About

Chicken Salad. How can a name have nothing to do with the content of the comic? Wasn’t that why Mr. Schultz didn’t like Peanuts as a title?

Well Chicken Salad was a tough one. In late 2007 I had a great idea for a 4-panel comic strip about comedy, invention, and other general tomfoolery. The characters were loosely based on me and my friend Luke and his lovely wife Teiko. Fergus and Oscar are me and Luke circa 2007, and Max and the unnamed boy are us circa 1990. A lot of the strips are based on actual things we did as kids. But you don’t really need to know that to enjoy the comic.

The name was tough. I spent weeks trying to come up with a title that would be catchy, but still broad enough to cover a variety of themes. One day while looking for a scrap of paper to write on, I found a poem my friend Marie had written for me months earlier. It was a haiku, and I’d actually suggested the name.

Chicken Salad. It was like a desk lamp had lit over my head (or something to that effect). The rest, as they say, is Swiss cheese.

I hope you enjoy the comic. If you have any questions, stand-up routines or gags you’d like to run by me, you can contact me at dave(at)sundayink(dot)com.

Cheers!
